Winter Tubing at Soldier Hollow

Do you feel the need? The need for speed? Then I recommend you take the family tubing at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Midway, Utah. My kids weren’t sure what to expect when our tubes starting sliding down the hill. But when they felt the wind rushing against their faces, we were all laughing with delight.

We enjoyed some family time in some of The Greatest Snow on Earth. And all we had to do was book in advance and show up in warm winter clothes.

Here are a few tips to help you plan your winter family adventure at Solider Hollow Nordic Center.

Book Tickets in Advance

While it’s not required to book tickets in advance, it’s strongly recommended. It would ruin your day if you drove all the way up to Soldier Hollow to find out they were already booked out for the day. Booking online is easy and allows you to select the two-hour time block that works best for your plans.

We booked our tickets about three weeks in advance, because we knew we needed to go on a Saturday so the kids didn’t miss school. We also had to go in the morning (10 a.m.) time block because my oldest son works in the afternoon.

On the website, you’ll want to find the pricing rate that coincides with when you want to go. There are four categories, and prices are for Adult (13+)/Youth (6-12)/Child (3-5):

  • Holidays/Holiday Weekends $32/$30/$21 (Dec. 17 thru Jan. 1, MLK and President’s Weekend)
  • Regular Weekends $29/$27/$16 (Friday-Sunday) (After Jan. 2)
  • Weekdays $22/$20/$15 (Monday-Thursday)
  • Spring Tubing $22/$20/$15 (March 1-19)

After you purchase your tickets, don’t forget to sign the waiver online for each member of your party. It will save you time when you arrive so you can spend more time tubing and less time filling out paperwork.

When You Arrive at Soldier Hollow

Once parked, you can have the kids start getting into their winter gear while an adult goes to check everyone in. The Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is due south of the parking lot. Check in at the counter and they will verify your reservation and your signed waivers. They’ll provide you with your passes and a metal clip to attach the pass to your coat.

After everyone has the pass attached, you can head west to the tubing hill. Find a tube and make sure it has a plastic bottom on it. If you don’t have the plastic bottom, your trip to the top will be wasted – You can’t ride a tube down the run if it doesn’t have the plastic bottom.

Get the Most out of Tubing at Soldier Hollow

With your tube in tow, there are two ways to get to the top:

  • Wait in line and ride the conveyor belt (can take up to 15-20 minutes)
  • Walk up the hill alongside the conveyor belt (can take 5-10 minutes, depending on how out of shape you are)

My kids took the “walk” option more than I did. My heart had been kicked out of rhythm the day before (I have atrial fibrillation) while skiing at Alta Ski Area, so I was easily winded. Since they decided to walk, they were able to get a few more runs in than me and my wife. We did trek up the hill once – and only once – because it’s harder than you think when pulling a tube.

Although my oldest son pulled my 12-year-old son up the hill in a tube. While he was proud he had accomplished that, he didn’t go up the hill again. He was done for the day.

I was worried that two hours would be too little time to fully enjoy tubing down the mountain. My wife and I got about 5-6 runs in during those two hours. But just before the two hour mark, all the kids said they were done. Not that they were bored, they were just done. I asked them in the car if they would’ve liked to have gone longer than the two hours and they said no. Either they’re party-poopers or Soldier Hollow has that time block thing figured out.
