Can You Do Mall of America in One Day? What Two Very Different Visits Taught Me

For many first-time visitors, the Mall of America raises a simple question: can you actually experience it all in a single day?

After spending a day there with my teenage son in 2022 and returning several years later for a couples getaway with my wife, I’ve come to a simple conclusion:

Yes, you can absolutely have a great day at Mall of America in one day. No, you cannot do everything.

The key isn’t trying to see it all. The key is planning a day that fits your interests and the people you’re traveling with.

Here’s what two very different visits taught me.

The Biggest Surprise: The Size of Mall of America

No matter how much you read about Mall of America before arriving, nothing truly prepares you for its size.

Most people expect a large shopping mall. What they discover is a massive entertainment complex that happens to include hundreds of stores.

Beyond shopping, you’ll find:

  • Nickelodeon Universe theme park
  • The Escape Game
  • Mini golf courses
  • SEA LIFE Aquarium
  • Restaurants and a Food Court
  • Specialty attractions
  • Entertainment venues
  • Interactive gaming experiences

On both visits, the sheer variety of things to do quickly became apparent.

My son and I spent most of an afternoon focused almost entirely on Nickelodeon Universe and still barely scratched the surface.

Years later, my wife and I spent nearly a full day exploring different activities and still left with a list of things we’d like to try on a future visit.

That’s when it really hits you: Mall of America isn’t one attraction. It’s dozens of attractions packed under one roof.

Visit #1: A Father-Son Day Focused on Nickelodeon Universe

In April 2022, I took my 13-year-old son on a father-son trip to Minnesota.

One of the highlights on our itinerary was Mall of America because we had learned about Nickelodeon Universe, the indoor theme park located in the center of the mall.

We arrived in the afternoon and stayed until closing.

Our plan was simple: ride as many attractions as possible.

That focus made planning easy. Rather than trying to see the entire mall, we concentrated on one experience and made the most of it.

Our favorite ride was the Fairly Odd Coaster, which remains one of my favorite attractions at the mall.

One of our funniest moments came on the Ninja Turtles ride. A woman in a nearby vehicle somehow managed to spin herself in complete barrel rolls for nearly the entire ride. My son and I struggled to complete even a single full rotation. We couldn’t stop laughing at how effortlessly she seemed to do something that left us completely impressed and slightly dizzy.

Even after spending hours in Nickelodeon Universe, we realized there were countless stores, attractions, restaurants, and experiences we hadn’t touched.

At the end of the day, I didn’t feel like we had run out of things to do. I felt like we had only completed one section of a much larger experience.

Visit #2: A Couples Day at Mall of America

My second visit couldn’t have been more different.

Over Labor Day weekend, my wife and I planned a couples getaway to Minneapolis.

Ironically, the entire trip started because my wife wanted to visit the M&M’S Store and purchase a deck of M&M-themed playing cards. That was the whole reason for the trip.

But since we knew the mall offered much more than shopping, we decided to turn the visit into a full day experience.

This visit felt completely different from my day with my son.

For starters, the mall was crowded. We visited on a Sunday during Labor Day weekend, and long lines were common throughout the mall. Looking back, I would probably choose a less busy weekend if possible.

Because the roller coaster lines were long and neither of us handles roller coasters as well as we did years ago, we quickly shifted our focus away from Nickelodeon Universe after a single ride on the Fairly Odd Coaster.

Instead, we focused on experiences we could enjoy together.

The Biggest Surprise of the Day?

The biggest surprise of the day was The Escape Game.

Neither of us had ever completed an escape room before. We joined a family group in “The Heist” and absolutely loved the experience. Solving puzzles together made for a surprisingly fun date activity. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we later purchased gift cards to our local Escape Game location as Christmas gifts for our kids.

We also enjoyed Moose Mountain Adventure Golf, which turned out to be another perfect date activity.

Add in stops at the M&M’S Store, the LEGO Store, souvenir shopping, lunch, and dinner afterward, and our day disappeared quickly.

Even after arriving shortly after opening and staying until activities began winding down, there were still attractions we didn’t have time to experience.

The Biggest Mistake First-Time Visitors Make

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to first-time visitors, it’s this:

Don’t try to do everything.

Trying to see everything in one day is almost guaranteed to leave you frustrated.

Instead, decide what kind of day you want to have.

  • Are you coming for rides?
  • Shopping?
  • Family activities?
  • A date day?
  • An entertainment-focused experience?

Once you know your priorities, planning becomes much easier.

The people who enjoy Mall of America the most aren’t the ones who attempt to see everything. They’re the ones who choose a handful of experiences and fully enjoy them.

How I Would Plan a Day at Mall of America

For Families with Teenagers

Start with Nickelodeon Universe.

Add one or two additional attractions, such as an escape room or climbing experience.

Build in time for meals, souvenir shopping, and exploring some of the unique stores throughout the mall.

For Couples

My recommendation would be:

  • The Escape Game
  • Mini golf
  • Shopping
  • A nice meal

Our experience showed that Mall of America can make for a surprisingly fun day date.

For Families with Younger Children

Nickelodeon Universe remains the obvious choice. There are rides for younger audiences, as well as teens and adults.

While SEA LIFE Aquarium wasn’t a standout for us because we’ve visited similar attractions elsewhere, families with younger children may find it to be a worthwhile addition to their day. There’s also The Crayola Experience, which my wife was very interested in doing – but we felt a little old.

Again, it comes down to matching activities with the interests of your group.

Consider Your Timing

One lesson from our second visit involved timing.

We visited on a holiday weekend, which meant larger crowds and longer waits.

If your schedule is flexible, consider visiting during a less busy period.

It’s also worth paying attention to operating hours.

When we visited on Sunday, the mall was only open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

That eight-hour window goes by surprisingly fast.

Monday through Saturday, visitors generally have a much larger window to explore, making it easier to fit more activities into their day.

If you’re serious about maximizing your visit, a weekday or non-holiday trip may offer a more relaxed experience.

So, Can You Do Mall of America in One Day?

Yes.

But only if you redefine what “do” means.

You cannot experience every store, every attraction, every restaurant, and every activity in a single day.

You can, however, have an outstanding day full of memorable experiences.

My son and I spent most of our time chasing rides and enjoying Nickelodeon Universe.

My wife and I spent our day solving puzzles, playing mini golf, shopping, and reliving the fun of our early dating years.

Both visits were successful.

Both visits felt completely different.

And both taught me the same lesson.

Research your options, choose the experiences that fit your group, and accept that there will always be something left for next time. Get a full rundown on what’s available at the Mall of America.

That’s not a drawback of Mall of America.

It’s actually one of the best reasons to come back.

Where to Stay and How to Get to Mall of America

One thing I appreciate about visiting Mall of America is that you don’t necessarily need a rental car.

On our most recent Minneapolis getaway, my wife and I relied on the METRO Blue Line to travel between downtown Minneapolis and Mall of America. The ride was straightforward, affordable, and eliminated the need to deal with parking or traffic around the mall.

If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend staying at a downtown Minneapolis hotel within walking distance of a Blue Line station. That gives you easy access to both downtown attractions and Mall of America.

I’ve personally stayed at each of the following hotels and would happily stay at any of them again:

Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown

The Courtyard Minneapolis Downtown – Marriott hotel offers convenient access to the Blue Line, making it easy to ride directly to Mall of America. It’s a solid choice for travelers who want a comfortable hotel while still having easy access to downtown restaurants, the riverfront, and public transportation.

Rand Tower Hotel Minneapolis, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

For travelers looking for something with a little more personality, the Rand Tower Hotel offers a unique historic atmosphere while still providing convenient access to transit.

During my stay, I appreciated the property’s character and downtown location, which made it easy to explore Minneapolis before heading to Mall of America.

Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown Convention Center

The Sheraton is another excellent option for visitors looking for a comfortable downtown base.

Its location provides good access to public transportation, making trips to and from Mall of America simple while also keeping you close to downtown Minneapolis attractions and dining.

Using the Blue Line

One of the biggest advantages of staying downtown is how simple the transit connection is.

Rather than driving, finding parking, and navigating traffic, you can simply board the Blue Line and ride directly to Mall of America. It only costs a few dollars, making it much cheaper than renting a car or taking a Ride Share.

It’s an easy option for visitors who want to spend the day exploring the mall and then return downtown for dinner, sporting events, museums, or an evening walk through the city.

In fact, after our most recent Mall of America visit, my wife and I wrapped up the day with dinner at Cedar + Stone before hopping on the Blue Line and heading back to downtown Minneapolis.

For us, that combination of downtown lodging and rail access made the entire experience much more enjoyable.
