Discover Chicago’s Story at the Chicago History Museum

When you’re exploring the Windy City, it’s easy to get caught up in the skyline, the deep-dish pizza, and the buzz of Michigan Avenue. But if you want to really understand Chicago—its triumphs, tragedies, and transformations—the Chicago History Museum is the perfect place to start.

My oldest son is a history buff. When he joined me in Chicago for a business trip, he asked specifically to check out the Chicago History Museum, hoping to learn more about the great Chicago Fire. We were able to spend some time exploring not only the brief history of the fire, but the complete history of the Windy City.

What You’ll See at the Chicago History Museum

The museum houses more than 20 million artifacts, so there’s no shortage of stories to uncover. Some highlights include:

  • The Great Chicago Fire of 1871: Step into an immersive exhibit that shows how the fire reshaped the city and sparked one of the greatest rebuilding efforts in U.S. history.
  • Chicago: Crossroads of America: A permanent exhibit that explores the city’s role in transportation, industry, and culture. You can even climb aboard the first-ever ‘L’ train car.
  • Designing for Change: Protest art from the 1960s–70s, showcasing how Chicagoans used creativity to push for civil rights and social justice.
  • The World’s Columbian Exposition (1893): A world’s fair that introduced millions to new inventions, foods (hello, Cracker Jack!), and the grandeur of Chicago’s “White City.”
  • Emmett Till & Civil Rights: A powerful exhibit on how the murder of Emmett Till galvanized a national movement.
  • Temporary Exhibits: Rotating displays keep the museum fresh, from fashion and photography to sports and politics. Check out their website to see what exhibits are on display for your visit.

The Chicago History Museum isn’t just an indoor experience. There are opportunities to take you into the city to see history where the history happened. We didn’t have time to join a tour during our visit, but here are a few you may be interested in:

Why You’ll Love the Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum is more than a collection of artifacts. It’s a gateway to understanding how Chicago became the city it is today. Whether you’re fascinated by the Great Fire, intrigued by the World’s Fair, or eager to see history painted on the walls of Bronzeville, this museum offers a rich, hands-on experience for the history enthusiast (like my son) or the curious mind (like me).

One of the things I loved most about the museum was learning the significance of the Chicago flag. The white and blue stripes and the red stars. I won’t spoil the discovery for you, but it’s pretty cool.
