Explore Meow Wolf Denver and Travel Along the Convergence of Other Worlds

Four alien worlds collided together in Denver and the Quantum Department of Transportation, or QDOT, made it possible for you to easily travel and explore each of the four worlds. Meow Wolf Denver is an immersive and interactive permanent art installation in Denver, Colorado. There are hidden rooms behind unexpected doors, winding staircases between levels and millions of selfie opportunities.

If you have plans to visit Denver, I recommend scheduling a visit to Meow Wolf Denver. It’s great for a date night or even a group activity.

Here’s a rundown on what you can expect as you travel and explore the alien worlds.

The hours also vary by the date of the week. The museum typically opens between 10-11 a.m. and closes between 9-10 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on weekends. Entrance times are typically two hours before closing, because you need at least two hours dedicated to your visit.

If you want to enhance your experience and learn more about the stories around these alien worlds, buy a QPass for $3. It’s a RFID card you can tap at various screens during your visit to dive a little deeper.

How to Get to Meow Wolf Denver

Our experience in getting to Meow Wolf Denver was super frustrating. In short, the Apple maps app had us take a bus most of the way there, then walk what was supposed to be 0.5 miles. But when we arrived at the museum, we were on an overpass with no way to get down to ground level. So we walked an additional 0.5 miles to get off the overpass, then then 0.5 miles back to the museum. But we learned a few better options that I’ll share with you to save you time and mileage on your feet.

LIGHTRAIL

If you’re taking public transit from downtown Denver, I recommend taking the light rail from Union Station. The E Line or the W Line will take you to the Empower Field at Mile High Station, with Meow Wolf Denver being a short 0.3 mile walk – which is doable. Just note that as you walk under the overpass, there are a few tents setup on the non-sidewalk side of the road where people camp. It’s well lit, so even at night we didn’t feel unsafe. But just be aware of it.

PARKING

Parking is available at Meow Wolf Denver for $15 per day and is a first come, first serve option. You can pay at one of the kiosks in the front lot or the QR code on the A-Frames in the backside lot. On NFL game days, no parking is available at the venue.

RIDE SHARE

The best option – in my opinion – is to take an UBER or Lyft to Meow Wolf Denver. They can drive you directly to the venue, you don’t have to worry about parking, nor do you have to worry about walking under an overpass at night with a homeless camp on the other side of the road. 😉

How to Begin Your Journey Through the Alien Worlds

When you arrive at Meow Wolf Denver and are ready to enter, they’ll scan your tickets and have you go through some metal detectors for a screening. If you have a backpack or even small bag with you, that’s okay. Security will ask you to check it at the Coat Check area inside the museum if the backpack is too large. If your bag is small enough, then you can carry it with you during your journey.

CAMERAS: Most people just use their cellphone camera while in Meow Wolf. And that generally works pretty well. I brought my Canon 6D, and so did another parent in our group, and I know I was glad to have that heavier camera so I could capture photos in the low light. But nowadays, cellphone cameras will generally do the trick.

After getting inside the building and checking any bags or coats in the Coat Check area, you’re free to take the elevator up to the fourth floor of the venue. The elevator door man will ensure you get off at the one and only stop it makes after leaving – the fourth floor. The elevator does NOT take you back down to the main level, so you’ll have to find the stairs after you’ve wandered through all the floors and found all the hidden rooms.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

Each Meow Wolf exhibit has its own story. In Denver, it’s a convergence of four alien worlds you travel between, courtesy of the Quantum Department of Transportation. Each world is unique in its own way and you’ll be surprised at the unique things you’ll find along your journey. There is now “right” path to explore as you wander through Meow Wolf Denver. You can go left, right, up the stairs, down the stairs and all around. You can revisit areas you enjoyed or walk quickly through areas that don’t interest you. It’s YOUR journey through the worlds, so enjoy.

A Few Things You Don’t Want to Miss at Meow Wolf Denver

Meow Wolf Denver was sensory overload. One of the members in our group told us later that he was claustrophobic. He seemed to do okay, but there were some small spaces he probably wished we hadn’t ventured into. During our two-hour tour along the Quantum highways, we found a few areas that no one should miss on their journey – the trick will be finding those areas in the maze of intertwined pathways.

Mirror Maze

I always love a goof mirror maze. My favorite one – mainly because of its size and the fact that I was lost in it for a while – was at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. But this one is still fun and can disorient you a little as you explore it.

Rat Boxing Arcade Game

If you’re familiar with Rock Em, Sock Em Robots, then you’ll want to track down the arcade-style game where two rats are sword fighting. Each person can use a controller to try and beat up the other rat. The heads don’t pop up when hit, but it’s still fun to see how skilled you are with a controller.

Hidden Room in the Laundromat

One of the rooms you’ll walk through is a laundromat. You’ll see things spinning in the “washing machines” on the wall. But if you find the wall panel where someone would purchase laundry soap, pull it and the panel will open, revealing a hidden room. I would bet that 75% of the people who visit Meow Wolf never knew there was a room there.

Wall Filled with QR Codes

Have you ever scanned a QR code just because it was there? We found a wall with several QR codes (like 100+) and we each started scanning a few. They were links to articles about nature, animals, sounds and more. So when you find this room, take a few minutes to scan a couple QR codes to see what you access.

Hand Sanitizer Stations

Because of the nature of Meow Wolf Denver, you’ll likely be touching a lot of different things. Buttons, walls, door handles and more. As you explore the area, keep an eye out for hand sanitizer stations and pause for just a moment to use some on your hands. That’ll help keep you and others from transmitting or catching a bug.

QPASS

We weren’t familiar with QPAss during our visit. However, I did see some people tapping cards against sensors and interacting with those devices as we explored the venue. As I researched it further, it’s a supplemental way to explore Convergence Station and dive further into the stories of these alien worlds. It’s $3 per QPAss and you can pick it up at the front desk when you arrive.

You can spend at least two hours exploring Meow Wolf Denver, especially if you have young kids with you that will be mesmerized with all the lights, buttons, colors, and more. There’s no reason you can’t come back in the future – whether that’s a few weeks later or longer.

Don’t Forget the Gift Shop and HELLOFOOD Cafe & Bar

After you’ve explored the three upper levels of Meow Wolf, you can head back to the main floor. We couldn’t find an elevator that took us down – because the one that took us up isn’t an option for going back down. We ended up finding a staircase and following it back down to the ground level.

Before you exit the venue, step into the gift shop to see if there’s something that makes sense for you to snag. I picked up a souvenir patch to add to my collection. But they had books, t-shirts, art pieces, pins, pencils and so much more.

If you need to take a break during your visit, the main floor does have a place to grab some food. The HELLOFOOD Cafe & Bar offers a varying menu, depending on the season and availability. Currently, it lists things like tacos, rice bowls and burritos, with some grab-and-go options as well as desserts. It’s worth checking out if you need a little recharge along your journey.
