Marriott Cancun Resort: Hotel Review with Photos

My wife and I planned the perfect summer vacation for two. We wanted to celebrate our second wedding anniversary with an international trip. Since my wife had never been out of the country, we got her passport and booked a trip to Cancun, Mexico. We used our Marriott Rewards points to book three nights at the Marriott Cancun Resort. From the moment we arrived, we knew we had picked a great hotel. The staff was friendly, the view from our balcony was amazing, and the location was nearby everything we needed.

Here’s an overview of what you can expect when you book your stay at the Marriott Cancun Resort.

And if you’re looking for day trips Cancun, read about Chichen Itza or a snorkeling trip out to Isla Mujeres

Transportation from the Airport to the Cancun Resort

When it comes to travel, one of the many questions you need answered is: How do I get from the airport to the hotel? Rental car? Shuttle? Bus? Taxi? Uber? With so many options, it should be easy. But when traveling international, you want to make sure you find a reliable (and safe) way to get from the airport to the hotel.

Once our Marriott Cancun Resort reservation was complete, we started looking at transportation options. The hotel contracts with a shuttle service specific to Marriott. That means you won’t have to make stops at hundreds of other hotels on the short drive from the airport to the resort.

Here’s how to schedule it: Contact the company at least 24 hours in advance of your arrival time. You can call them (Toll free from US: 1-877-895-0980, +52-998-881-2048) or send them an email at transportationservice@prestigecancun.com) to make your reservation. The cost is $17USD per person per way. The person who met us at the airport was very friendly and professional.

If you have a larger group, you may consider taking a taxi. It’s about $40USD each way.

Comfortable Beds and Spacious Bathrooms

The bed can make or break your opinion of any hotel. My wife LOVED the bed. It was comfortable, with almost angelic pillows. The sheets were soft as well. Since we were only a group of two, the room was spacious enough for our needs. There was a couch and coffee table in the room as well, which served as a dinner table after picking up some late-night snacks from the hotel cafe.

We ended up in an Ocean View room. As you noted from some of the other photos, the view was phenomenal. The balcony was perfect for watching the sunset or just enjoying the sound of the crashing ocean waves – far from the cares of daily life. The perfect vacation!

The bathroom was spacious as well. With a private toilet area, a modern shower with two shower heads and a modern-looking vanity, even the bathroom didn’t disappoint. 😉

One evening, when we returned from our day-long adventure to Chichen Itza, we found a cute little towel bunny and two chocolates on our nightstand. It was a little thing, but my wife LOVED it almost as much as the comfy bed.

Activities for the Whole Family

The Marriott Cancun Resort had something for everyone. Many activities were onsite; other bookable activities were a short walk away – like parasailing. Everyone can hang out at the beach and play in the crashing waves. The large pool is great for a game of volleyball or goofing around. A whirlpool nearby gives the adults the opportunity to relax and unwind.

If you’re up for a game of chess or checkers, there are two 12-foot boards with 3-feet-tall chess pieces there as well. Nearby is a jumbo sized game of Jenga, or a ping pong table. If you want to simply sit in a lounge chair and take a nap, you can do that, too.

In the evening, a large inflatable movie screen was placed in the garden area below our hotel room. The smell of popcorn from the old-fashioned popcorn machine kept drawing us down to watch Disney’s Cocoa, or one of the other kid-friendly movies. Even though Cancun has a lot to offer, we wish we would’ve had one more day in Cancun to simply relax and enjoy everything the hotel had to offer.

Easy Access to Dining and Shopping

The resort property itself has nearly a dozen places to eat, ranging from Asian to American, and every style in between. Our first encounter was at Champions Sports Bar (don’t judge – we realized we were in Mexico and the first place we chose to eat was an American restaurant). My wife LOVED the queso and wanted to just keep enjoying that from our chips and queso appetizer.

Although the Marriott Cancun Resort had nice fine dining options, we were on a tight budget. Our meals – outside of those included on our day-long excursions – came from 750 Pizzeria. The little cafe had more than pizza. There were delicious sandwiches and scrumptious desserts. We enjoyed the gelato at least one night of our trip, too. Since the cafe is also located in the gift shop, we purchased our share of Kinder Eggs – the hollow chocolate egg with a little toy inside.

If you’re looking for some off-property dining to enjoy, we stumbled across the Blue Gecko. The food was great, along with the service. I had the BEST EVER piña colada. It was a great treat for our final night in Mexico. The Blue Gecko was within walking distance – roughly 10 minutes south. Seating is limited, but in late June around 8 pm, we had no troubles finding a seat.

The JW Marriott Resort (just north of the Marriott Cancun Resort) has a little shopping complex connected to it. We were able to pick up a Mayan souvenir  to accompany our Barre Negro (black clay) vase we purchased from our hotel gift shop.

A short bus ride north to Zona Hotelera will take you to many other shopping places and dining options. Just remember… in Cancun, you never have to pay full price for any souvenir. You can always negotiate them down a little… or a lot of you’re really good!
