New England Lighthouse: Nubble Light
I’m not sure why people are drawn to lighthouses. I’m not talking about the sailors who would use them to navigate and stay safe. It’s clear why they would be drawn to them. Haha! But there is something about the beauty of a lighthouse, standing tall on the shoreline as a beacon – day or night. The Nubble Light in Maine is one of those beautiful New England lighthouses.
While visiting family in New England, my mom wanted us to stop at Nubble Light on our way to visit Grandpy Myers in Maine. She’s a lighthouse fanatic!
It’s a beautiful place to visit, and although we were there for only 20-30 minutes, there are many activities there for everyone to enjoy.
Getting to Nubble Light
Nubble Light is located in Town of York. It’s about 45 miles south of the most photographed lighthouse in America: Portland Head Light in Portland, Maine. If coming from the south, it’s 15 miles northeast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Nubble Light is located on Cape Neddick. When you arrive, there are parking spots for about 60 vehicles. If you happen to visit during a busy time of the year (namely, summer and fall), don’t park illegally just because all the spots are full.

You can stop into the Sohier Park Welcome Center and Gift Shop to learn more about the area or purchase a souvenir. However, the shop is only open April through October. There are restrooms here as well.
Activities to Enjoy at Nubble Light
Beyond stopping to simply see Nubble Light, there are many other activities you can do while visiting this lighthouse.
Since I’m into photography, many of my kids were, too. They grabbed a camera and started taking photos of the lighthouse, birds, people and just about anything, really. Good thing they’re digital cameras so I don’t have to pay to develop film and print photos of pretty much nothing.

- Scuba diving (not allowed on Sundays)
NOTE: Visitors are not permitted onto the little island where Nubble Lightouse is located. You can to look at it (and photograph it) from a distance.
