Visit Carthage Jail: A Sacred Stop for Latter-day Saint History
Tucked in the quiet town of Carthage, Illinois, just 30 minutes from Historic Nauvoo, stands a solemn limestone building that changed the course of Latter-day Saint history. Carthage Jail may look like a modest 19th-century structure from the outside, but for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it’s a sacred site where faith, sacrifice, and legacy converge.
Whether you’re visiting as part of a Nauvoo pilgrimage or simply exploring Illinois history, here’s what you need to know before stepping inside this powerful place.

A Moment That Echoes Through Time
On June 27, 1844, Church founder Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were killed by an armed mob while imprisoned in Carthage Jail. Their deaths marked a pivotal moment in the early Latter-day Saint movement, sealing their testimonies with their lives. Today, the site is preserved and operated by the Church, offering visitors a reverent glimpse into that fateful day and the events that led up to it.
Our visit to Carthage Jail helped me to better understand and visualize the day I’d learned about in books. The tour guide walked us through the history of that day and helped us better understand how the events played out.
RELATED TRAVEL TIP: Plan your visit to Nauvoo and the historic Nauvoo Pageant
Your Carthage Jail experience begins at the adjacent Visitors’ Center. Friendly missionary guides greet you and provide a brief orientation, followed by a short video that sets the historical stage. The film offers context about the tensions in Illinois during the 1840s, the growing city of Nauvoo, and the events that led to Joseph and Hyrum’s arrest.
The Visitors’ Center also includes exhibits and artifacts that help bring the story to life. It’s the perfect place for families, youth groups, or anyone looking to deepen their understanding before the tour begins.

Guided Tours: What You’ll See
Tours are free and typically last about 30–45 minutes. Reservations are not required for individuals or small groups, but larger groups are encouraged to schedule in advance through the official site. When you arrive, simply put your name on the list. We visited in early July and didn’t have to wait long for the next tour to begin.
During the tour, you’ll walk through the original jail building, including:
- The main floor and guardroom, where visitors learn about the jail’s construction and purpose.
- The upstairs bedroom, where Joseph, Hyrum, John Taylor, and Willard Richards were held. This is the room where the mob attacked, and where Hyrum was shot through the door.
- The window, from which Joseph Smith fell after being fatally shot.
- The bullet holes, still visible in the door, serve as haunting reminders of the violence that occurred.
Missionary guides share historical insights and spiritual reflections throughout the tour, making it both educational and deeply moving.

Final Thoughts
Carthage Jail isn’t just a historical site. It’s a place of reflection, reverence, and testimony. Whether you’re a lifelong member of the Church or simply curious about American religious history, this site offers a powerful reminder of the cost of conviction and the enduring strength of faith.
I’m passionate about history and appreciated the opportunities my wife and I had to walk through history related to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We spent a couple of days in Nauvoo, Illinois, but also explored Liberty Jail in Missouri during our Midwest road trip.
