Tips to Maximize Your Experience

I’ve visited several other Museum of Illusions across the country: Kansas City, Chicago, and New York City. I’ve learned a few things in my experience that can help you maximize your experience.

Tip #1: Travel Light
Leave backpacks, coats, and extra gear behind. They’ll only get in the way of your fun photo ops. You also risk losing them if you forget about them in all the fun and end up leaving them behind.

Tip #2: Bring a Camera or Smartphone
This museum is Instagram and TikTok gold! Don’t hesitate to ask staff for help. They’re pros at setting up the perfect shot and even suggesting creative poses. Our guide was FABULOUS and had some many great tips and ideas.

Tip #3: Plan for Two Hours
Rushing through will make you miss the magic. Take your time exploring, and before you exit, loop back to revisit your favorite illusions or tackle the puzzles in the Brain Gym.

Tip #4: Engage with the Exhibits
Touch, interact, and play! The more you immerse yourself, the more memorable your visit will be. Have fun, enjoy the laughs, and you’ll be talking about your experience and sharing your photos for weeks to come.

What You’ll Find at the Museum of Illusions

Step into a world where reality bends and perception plays tricks on your mind. From gravity-defying rooms to holograms and optical illusions, every corner is designed to surprise and delight. It’s not just a museum. It really is an interactive playground for your senses.

The Museum of Illusions is divided into four rooms. Each one offers a slightly different groupings of exhibits. Regardless, the museum has a great colorful and vibrant theme specific to New Orleans, so get creative and have some fun.

RELATED TRAVEL TIP: The best things to do in New Orleans

In addition to some mind-bending exhibits on the walls that make you think, there are numerous exhibits where YOU are the illusion. Mirrors make a lot of it happen, but you’ll have to see some of the science for yourself.

The vortex tunnel is a favorite for many people. We enjoyed it as well, but I have to admit… I did get a little dizzy watching the vortex spin. It definitely throws off your equilibrium, so be self-aware of how much spinning you can take so you don’t end up losing your jambalaya on the ground. Haha!

I’m not going to explain each of the rooms, exhibits, and illusions, but trust me. You’ll have a lot of fun.

A Few Final Thoughts

Unlike traditional museums, the Museum of Illusions is all about participation. Whether you’re shrinking in the Ames Room or defying gravity in the Tilted Room, every exhibit is designed for laughs, learning, and unforgettable photos. You can also pick up some unique gifts in the gift shop. You’ll find fidget spinners, magnets, wooden games and puzzles, t-shirts, Newton’s Cradle, rubber pencils, and many other items.

I also need to give a shout-out to the amazing staff at the museum. From the women we met at the front counter, to the countless guides inside the museum that helped us take photos or troubleshoot one of the puzzles in the Brain Gym, it was apparent they all love their job. They’re passionate about making the experience of each person something memorable. The photos they help you capture will be great souvenirs from your experience.
