Ride the Rails in Boone, Iowa, with Rail Explorers USA
There’s something magical about slowing down and seeing the world from a new perspective. In Boone, Iowa, Rail Explorers offers a chance to pedal along historic railroad tracks through farmland, forests, and across towering trestle bridges. It’s part adventure, part relaxation, and entirely unforgettable. It’s a must-do activity for anyone visiting central Iowa.
Our experience was part of a school trip to the National Speech and Debate Tournament in June 2025 to Des Moines. I tagged along as a parent chaperone to watch my son compete in his events… and even judge a few of the other events. The activity was a wonderful – and needed – break from the hustle and bustle of the tournament.
Here’s what you should know about riding the rails in Boone, Iowa.

The Rail Explorers Experience
You get to sit in comfortable, open-air rail bike that glides along the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad tracks. Each bike is equipped with a pedal-assist electric motor that makes the ride effortless. Think of it like an e-bike on railroad tracks. That means you don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy the journey. Families, couples, and groups of friends can all take part without worrying about a grueling workout.
The three others in my cart nominated me to the primary pedaler. That meant if I wasn’t pedaling, the motor wasn’t engaging and the car wasn’t being powered. The pressure was on, but I did not let my fellow riders down.
The highlight of the ride is crossing the Bass Point Creek High Trestle, a 750-foot-long bridge that soars 156 feet above the valley floor. You’ll also roll past farmland, forests, and the Des Moines River, with plenty of opportunities to soak in the scenery.

- Closed-Toe Shoes – For comfort and safety while pedaling.
- Camera or Phone – You’ll want photos of the trestle views and countryside. If you have a camera with a strap, that may be helpful so you don’t accidentally drop your camera into the ravine.
Note: Pets aren’t allowed on the tours, and rides may be canceled in extreme weather.

What to Expect on the Ride
From the moment you set off, the ride feels both adventurous and relaxing. There’s something fun about listening to and feeling the clacking of the wheels on the rails. The gentle hum of the electric motor means you can pedal as much—or as little—as you like. You’ll pass through rolling farmland, cross bridges with sweeping views, and maybe even spot wildlife along the riverbanks.
At the turnaround, you’ll have time to rest, snack, and enjoy the scenery before heading back. The return trip is just as enjoyable, with the landscape shifting as the light changes.
Rail Explorers in Boone isn’t just a ride. It’s an experience. It combines history, nature, and a touch of adventure in a way that’s accessible to everyone. Thanks to the pedal-assist motor, it’s not about endurance. It truly is about enjoying the journey along the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad.
