Discover Chicago’s Skyline from the Water: Book an Architecture Boat Tour

Chicago’s skyline is a masterpiece of modern architecture and there’s no better way to experience it than from the deck of a Wendella boat. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a Windy City regular, Wendella’s architecture tour offers a fresh perspective on the city’s towering legends, historic bridges, and riverfront charm.

My son and I enjoyed an evening architecture tour in Chicago during a work conference in the Windy City. The weather was a little chilly, but that’s probably because it was mid-March. Regardless, we had a great time on the tour. I loved learning more about the architectural styles and history of the towering buildings lining the river.

If you’re planning to visit Chicago, here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip.

Before You Go: Booking, Timing, and Weather Tips

Wendella offers several tour options, but the 75-minute Chicago River Architecture Tour is the classic choice for architecture buffs and curious travelers alike. You’ll cruise all three branches of the river, guided by a local expert who knows the city’s buildings like old friends.

Booking Tips:

There are a few companies that offer architecture tours in Chicago. During our trip, we chose Wendella and it’s a group I would recommend. But here are some tips to help you book the right tour that works with your travel itinerary.

  • Reserve your tickets online in advance at Wendella’s official site to secure your preferred time.
  • Tours run daily, typically from 9 AM to 9 PM Sunday–Thursday, and 9 AM to 10 PM Friday–Saturday.
  • Tickets are non-refundable, but you can transfer them to another time or date if your plans change.

Weather Watch:

We knew the weather would be a little chilly, since we were visiting Chicago in March. However, most of the people in our group didn’t bring enough layers for an evening tour and spent the majority of the tour inside.

  • Tours run rain or shine, and Chicago’s weather can change quickly. Check the forecast and dress accordingly.
  • Boats feature open-air decks and climate-controlled cabins, so you’ll stay comfortable no matter the conditions. However, you can’t see the tall buildings from inside the cabins.

Where to Meet and What to Bring

Boarding takes place at 400 N Michigan Avenue, right next to the historic Wrigley Building at the DuSable (Michigan Avenue) Bridge. Look for the stairs leading down to the river level. Wendella’s dock is easy to spot once you’re there.

It’s recommended to arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled architecture tour departure time. We arrived 10 minutes beforehand and ended up on the lower decks of the boat. That made it a lot more difficult to see the Chicago skyline. Late arrival may literally miss the boat. Don’t be that guy.

Parking is available nearby at AMA Plaza Garage, Trump Tower Garage, or via apps like SpotHero. That said, I recommend walking there, or taking public transit or a Ride Share.

Wendella boats are built for comfort, but a few essentials will make your trip even smoother:

  • Camera or smartphone for skyline shots—sunset tours offer especially stunning light.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen if you’re sitting on the upper deck.
  • Light jacket or layers, especially in spring or fall.
  • Cash or card for snacks and drinks from the onboard bar (think soft drinks, wine, beer, and cocktails).
  • Curiosity—you’ll want it for all the stories and trivia coming your way.

Note: Outside food, alcohol, and weapons are not allowed, and all bags are subject to screening.

What You’ll See on the Architecture Tour in Chicago

I don’t want to spoil all the neat facts (and jokes) the tour guide will share with you. However, I do want to give you a few highlights on what you’ll see during the tour.

Your guide will share stories of innovation, resilience, and design flair as you pass more than 50 iconic buildings, including:

  • Wrigley Building – A gleaming white landmark with Spanish Revival flair.
  • Tribune Tower – A neo-Gothic beauty with stones from world monuments embedded in its walls.
  • Marina City – The “corncob towers” that redefined urban living.
  • Willis Tower – Once the tallest building in the world, still a giant in the skyline.
  • Merchandise Mart, Wolf Point, and the Centennial Fountain also make appearances.

You’ll learn how Chicago rose from the ashes of the Great Fire to become a global leader in architecture—and why its riverfront is the best seat in the house.
