Visit the Frontier Relics and Auto Museum
Road trips are great. Especially when you stop in small towns with amazing museums. Gillette, Wyoming, is one of those towns. The Frontier Relics and Auto Museum was enjoyed by the parents and kids as we made our way across Wyoming to Mount Rushmore (via Devil’s Tower).
Step back in time with a visit to the Frontier Relics and Auto Museum. However, seeing many things I played with or had in my house growing up made me feel old.
Shop at the Antique Store
The Frontier Relics and Auto Museum is also a store. The store portion is accessible to all, without having to enter the museum. It’s like an amazing gift shop. During our visit, there were also antique and vintage items (road signs, toys, etc.) setup just outside the museum.
We saw a Lionel Train, books, art, salt and pepper shakers, candy and so much more. If you’re into antiquing, you’ll definitely want to stop in at this store.
One example of a great find – my wife saw a cookie jar that was similar to one her grandma had in her house when she was growing up. I liked the vintage trains and was tempted to buy one, but my budget told me I shouldn’t.
Tour the Vintage Cars, Signs and More
There is a cost to tour the Frontier Auto Museum. Once you’ve paid, go through the turnstile near one of the old cars and follow the arrows on the ground.
I love how the museum tries to bring you back to the days of the items you’re looking at. For example, while checking out the barber shop, I could hear sounds of hair trimmers. While in the model train room, I heard the sounds of trains steaming by.
We explored each room of the museum, including a general store, an auto mechanics shop, a telephone/telegraph room and a few others with Hudson cars. One nostalgic area for me was the Drive-in Movie area. The little speaker boxes we would put in our window while at the Drive-in was next to a car. I had to explain to my kids how that worked – because nowadays we simply tune our car radio to the right station and we’re good to go.

Regardless of whether you need to use the restroom while you’re there, you should still check it out. I don’t want to ruin the uniqueness of the bathroom sink, but it’s spot on with the auto element of the Frontier Auto Museum.
Photo Gallery of the Museum
We all had a great time exploring the museum. Although my 17-year-old son’s face in the photo above is “un-amused”, he later mentioned that he found some of the items interesting.
