Hyrum Lake State Park: What You Need to Know

Utah summers are scorching. So a day at a beautiful lake is refreshing. Hyrum Lake State Park near Logan, Utah, is a wonderful spot for some summer fun. We brought our kayaks and kids to the lake earlier this year to check it out and can see why it’s a hot spot to cool off in the summer.

Here’s a quick guide to Hyrum Lake State Park so you can plan a day trip for kayaking, swimming, and a picnic lunch.

Getting to Hyrum Lake State Park

Hyrum Lake State Park is about eight miles south of Logan in the city of Hyrum. To get there, take Highway 89 to Wellsville’s main street. Head east along highway 101 until you get to 400 W in Hyrum. Head south and you’ll run right into one of two entrances to the park.

The marina entrance provides you access to the boat ramp and campground. There are restrooms available at this entrance as well, along with a fish cleaning station (for those of you wanting to go fishing). If you’re visiting for a day trip, there is a small parking lot where you can access the lake, but I would recommend using the other entrance.

The second entrance is located at 2 E 500 South in Hyrum. There’s a guard shack there so you can pay the entrance fee (or show your annual state parks pass). This access point provides more beach access for swimming and kayaking. Restrooms are located at this entrance as well, right near the parking area.

Kayak at Hyrum Lake State Park

A kayak can be launched from either park entrance. However, we found it easier to use the Day Use entrance. From there, we could park next to a wheelchair ramp down to the shoreline, or carry the kayaks down the flight of stairs.

The earlier in the year you visit, the less shoreline you’ll have. The water will also be colder (as we discovered in early May). The Day Use area has a section marked off for swimmers – which means no motor boats are allowed. That said, there was a small boat that came into the swimming area a few times to drop off family members who were swimming. There is a dock there, but not sure it’s really intended for boat docking – rather a place for people to use to jump into the water.

Kayaks aren’t restricted to the swimming area. However, there are motorboats racing around the lake with skiers to inflatables, so you’ll need to be cautious. Also, if it’s windy, kayaking against the wind can be challenging. Be safe as you kayak.

Camping, Fishing and Boating

We saw a few people fishing near the day use area. They were right on the border of the designated swimming area. You could also fish from your boat, kayak or inflatable as appropriate. The marina entrance area provides a fish cleaning station, too.

The main marina entrance is where you would check in for your campsite registration. Campsites must be reserved at least two days in advance (but no more than four months in advance) using their online reservation system. Follow the additional guidelines about what is allowed or not allowed at the campground.

The marina entrance offers a boat launch ramp and courtesy dock. They do ask that you spend no more than 15 minutes at the courtesy dock waiting for your party to join you on the boat. Vehicles pulling boat trailers can park in the designated stalls – but no trailerless vehicles are allowed in those parking stalls. There are other areas for them to park.
