Multnomah Falls in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge
Multnomah Falls is an iconic spot in Oregon. It’s located along the lush green Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and towers above the roadway. Parking and access to the site, along with a short hike, are free.
But because of the popularity of Multnomah Falls, you’ll want to read about how you can maximize your stop and more fully enjoy the scenery.
How to Get to Multnomah Falls in Oregon
It’s pretty easy to get to Multnomah Falls. It’s just off of Interstate 84 at exit 31. The exit is accessible from both directions on the freeway.
The popularity of the falls may also create traffic hazards. But the USDA Forest Services has put some things in place to help reduce traffic hazards.
If possible, avoid visiting between 10-3 p.m.
As you approach exit 31, if the parking lot is full, there is a gate that makes it impossible to get off the interstate to access Multnomah Falls. You are not allowed to park and wait for the gate to be lifted.
The parking lot is positioned in between the east-bound and westbound sides of the Interstate. Once parked, walk south underneath the freeway to the Multnomah Falls Lodge.
If the parking lots are full, there is a shuttle at Rooster Rock State Park (7.2 miles west of Multnomah Falls) that offers additional parking and a shuttle to the falls. There is a $5 Day Use Fee at Rooster Rock State Park, but that provides the shuttle free of charge.
If you’re visiting the Portland area, plan a day trip to Cape Disappointment State Park. It’s located just across the Columbia River in the southwest corner of Washington state.
Hike to Benson Bridge
When you arrive at Multnomah Falls Lodge, there are well-maintained bathrooms, a visitor center, restaurant and snack bar. You’re welcome to explore there before you start the short hike up to Benson Bridge.
A paved path will guide you to the base of the falls. It’s here where you’ll want to capture the full waterfall – the top and bottom portion.
From there, continue along the trail to Benson Bridge. The trail begins with a small flight of stairs. There is one switchback on the way to the bridge. The trail is less than a half-mile roundtrip.
Keep in mind that you must keep on the trail. There is no swimming in either the upper or lower pools – although on a hot day, that would probably feel AMAZING!
Hiking Trails to the Top of Multnomah Falls
The trail does continue beyond Benson Bridge. You can hike to a viewpoint near the top of the upper waterfall. There are several switchbacks along the way as you climb the side of the mountain.
NOTE: Due to some rock slides along this trail, it’s closed past Benson Bridge. As of April 22, 2019 when this article was published. Visit their website for updates on the closure so you’ll know what to expect.
There is a longer trail that continues beyond the top of the upper waterfall. If you’re interested in exploring that area, check in at the USDA Forest Service Information Center near the Multnomah Falls Lodge.
