Beaver Mountain Ski Resort: 4 Things to Know

I’ll be honest: I’m not the biggest fan of skiing. I have ski lift anxiety (it’s a thing! haha!). But I really enjoyed a day on the slopes with my brother at Beaver Mountain up Logan Canyon.

2021-2022 SEASON: Beaver Mountain Ski Resort is open for the season. You can buy day-of tickets at the resort – no need for advanced reservations. Learn more about their COVID-19 guidelines and plan your day on the slopes.

If you’re looking for a place to take the family skiing, here are four things you should know about Beaver Mountain Ski Resort.

Beaver Mountain is Accessible

Most people probably think Beaver Mountain is too far of a drive from Salt Lake City. But I’ve sat in heavy traffic, messed with parking and taken a bus to some of the resorts closer to Salt Lake, and a two-hour drive to Beaver Mountain was worth it.

My brother and I enjoyed great conversation on the drive up. We enjoyed the scenery of both Sardine Canyon and Logan Canyon. Rather than sitting in traffic trying to get up Big or Little Cottonwood Canyon, we kept moving and didn’t have parking problems when we arrived. So don’t let the distance fool you.

Rent the Gear You Need

Since I’m not an avid skier, I don’t own anything skiing related. Unless you count snowpants, gloves, hat, scarf and coat. When I arrived at Beaver Mountain, I found everything I needed for a day on the slopes.

  • Skis or snowboards
  • Ski boots
  • Ski poles (if you need them – and yes, I did)
  • Goggles
  • Helmet (a must for everyone of all ages and abilities)

So if you don’t want to mess with hauling your own gear up the mountain, take advantage of the rental shop.

Ski Runs for Every Ability

I’m very comfortable skiing on the green and blue runs. My brother’s the same way. We discovered the many options available at Beaver Mountain and spent our time enjoying the more leisurely runs.

We spent the morning getting our ski legs oriented on runs from the Little Beaver ski lift. The runs included Cottontail, Tiny Tim and Goat Trail.

After getting warmed up, we decided to live life on the edge and take Harry’s Dream Lift to the top of the mountain. We found a path of green and blue runs and figured we’d be okay – Gentle Ben to Dead Horse and Lower Dead Horse.

Maybe our legs were just tired from our earlier runs – and lack of using the leg muscles required for skiing – but we found ourselves falling a little more than expected. It was a great run with lots of laughs. When we reached the lodge, we decided to pause and grab some lunch.

Delicious Food Available at the Lodge

Skiing takes a lot of work. So filling up on delicious food is a must. The lodge at Beaver Mountain offered lots of options: Soups, meats, sandwiches, burgers, fries, and desserts.

It felt great to take a break from the slopes in the warm lodge and enjoy not only the food, but the company of other skiers. We spoke with a guy on ski patrol who had been working at Beaver Mountain for decades. He talked about how great the snow is because of the north facing slopes and the way they groom the snow.

After you get your fill of food and warm up, it’s time to get back out and enjoy the beautiful winter day. We made another run or two on Little Beaver before calling it a day and hobbling back to the car – our muscles were sore. Haha!

  1. I love Beaver Mountain! First time I ever donned a pair of skis was here. Great bunny hill for learners and more advanced slopes for all levels. Great for Skiers and Boarders alike. Great post Jason.

    1. My first skiing experience was also at Beaver at the age of 16. I was so bad, I ran over a dad and young daughter combo ski lesson. Yikes. I’ve gotten better since then, but definitely prefer to stick to the greens and blues. 😉
